mmogo Bionicles was one of the first products that felt like it was withholding secrets from me. It was not an opaque, bright, simple toy, but something with a story and some really intriguing depth for a child who hadn't been offered anything like it. Great Spirit brings me back to those feelings again. As an atmospheric, ambient album, it does not leave everything on the surface. It asks me to pay attention and dig in if I want to get the most out of it, much like that world. Favorite track: Tree Palace.

G R E A T S P I R I T

For a while now, I've been compiling samples that I've wanted to use under my main output as m a g g i e . w a v. That being said, most of my process is trial and error. Much of the time, I still find the error to be pretty fun because it essentially results in eccojams. While working on my second album, I've run into a number of distractions, this project being one of them. This is to be the first in a continuing series of contorting and cataloguing the media of my youth that I can't repurpose into something more structured and meaningful.

I was trying to sleep last night to no avail and started watching a playthrough of Mata Nui Online, a Bionicle flash game from the early 2000s that helped to solidify my love for the series. Bionicle is one of those franchises that is a mixed media nightmare that could have been so much more if only it was more carefully planned. I remembered that I downloaded the soundtrack a while ago only to be disappointed by the compressed audio quality. It didn't sound as beautiful as I remembered, nor were the compositions as impressive as I once thought.

Consider this the way that I remembered the game, faded from the memory but still latently beautiful. Enjoy.

This album plays out like a love note. Each track seems poised with purpose, even if said purpose is not known to the listener. Belle Isle and Love Me Right steal the show, with the former being something of a vaporfunk kickoff, and the latter having much in common with the Italo Disco of the 80s. csthielen
